Call (973) 389-3110. Dispatch answers 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including nights, weekends and Sundays. How soon a vehicle can arrive depends on which crews are free at that moment, so call as soon as discharge looks likely rather than waiting for the paperwork to be signed. Same-day trips must be booked by phone; the online request form only accepts trips at least 48 hours ahead.
What should the discharge planner have ready when calling?
The pickup location (hospital, unit and room) and the destination address; whether the patient can sit in a wheelchair for the whole ride or must lie flat; whether they need oxygen, and if so whether they will use their own portable unit; how many steps there are at the pickup and at the destination; the patient's approximate weight; the expected discharge time; and who is paying for the trip. Steps and weight matter because New Jersey's wheelchair-van rules require a second crew member when a wheelchair patient goes up or down five or more steps, or weighs 200 lb or more and goes up or down two or more steps.
Does the patient need a wheelchair van or a stretcher?
If the patient can sit upright safely for the entire ride, a wheelchair van (Mobility Assistance Vehicle) is the right level. If they must lie flat, they need a stretcher, which means a Basic Life Support (BLS) ambulance. Delta is licensed by the NJ Department of Health for both levels, so either can be booked with the same call. A patient who depends on a ventilator needs a higher level of service than a wheelchair van, so describe any breathing equipment when you call.

Is the ride billed to the hospital or to the patient?
It depends on the arrangement: some facilities book and pay for discharge rides themselves, while in other cases the patient or family pays privately or through a plan that covers the trip, so confirm which applies when you book.
Can a family member ride home with the patient?
Yes. On a private-pay trip, one companion rides at no additional charge, and two are often possible depending on the vehicle. If a plan is paying for the ride, mention the companion when the trip is booked.
