How-To Guide

How to Book Medical Transportation in New Jersey

Booking a non-emergency medical ride is simple. This guide walks you through both paths: scheduling a private ride directly with Delta, and arranging a Medicaid (NJ FamilyCare) ride through your health plan.

1. Two Ways to Book a Ride

Booking non-emergency medical transportation in New Jersey is straightforward, and there are two main paths depending on how your ride is paid for:

  • Private booking with Delta — you call or fill out our online form and schedule the ride directly with us. This is the fastest option and works for self-pay, private-pay, and facility-arranged trips.
  • Medicaid-covered rides — if you are an NJ FamilyCare member, your covered ride is arranged through your health plan's transportation line, not booked directly with a provider.

The sections below cover each path. If you are unsure which applies to you, you can always contact us and we will point you in the right direction.

2. How to Book a Ride With Delta

To schedule a private ride with Delta Medical Transportation, follow these steps:

1

Call us or use the online form

Call (973) 389-3110 to speak with our dispatch team, or fill out the request form at the bottom of this page. Phone is best for same-day or time-sensitive trips.

2

Have your trip details ready

We will ask for your pickup address, your destination, and the date and time you need to arrive. Having the exact appointment time on hand helps us schedule the right pickup window.

3

Tell us your mobility needs and vehicle type

Let us know whether you can walk and transfer on your own (ambulatory), need a wheelchair-accessible van, or require stretcher transport. We will match you with the correct vehicle.

4

Confirm one-way or round-trip and any equipment

Tell us if you need a return ride and roughly when, and mention any equipment you travel with — a wheelchair, walker, or oxygen — so the driver arrives prepared.

5

Book in advance when you can

We recommend booking 24 to 48 hours ahead so we can confirm the vehicle and pickup window. Same-day rides are available when we have capacity, so call early and we will do our best to accommodate you.

3. Booking a Medicaid (NJ FamilyCare) Ride

If your transportation is covered by NJ Medicaid (called NJ FamilyCare), the ride is not booked directly with a transportation company. Instead, it is arranged through your managed-care plan's transportation line. In New Jersey, the statewide Medicaid transportation broker is ModivCare (formerly LogistiCare), which coordinates covered NEMT trips on behalf of the FamilyCare plans.

To book a covered Medicaid ride:

  • Call the transportation number printed on the back of your plan card. Each NJ FamilyCare plan has its own dedicated transportation line.
  • Book at least 2 business days ahead of your appointment. Earlier is better, and recurring treatments can be set up as a standing order (see the next section).
  • Have your appointment details and NJ FamilyCare member ID ready when you call.

Good to know

Booking a ride with Delta is not the same as using your Medicaid transportation benefit. Delta is a transportation provider, not your plan's Medicaid broker. To use your covered benefit, you must request the trip through your plan's transportation line so it is authorized.

For the transportation phone number for each NJ FamilyCare plan and a full walkthrough of the Medicaid process, see our NJ Medicaid NEMT guide.

4. Standing Orders for Recurring Rides

If you travel to the same treatment on a regular schedule — most commonly dialysis three times a week, or chemotherapy — you do not have to call before every single appointment. You can set up a standing order with one setup, and your recurring rides are reserved automatically.

When you book, just tell us (or your plan's transportation line, for Medicaid rides) your treatment days, times, and the facility address. We will reserve the same recurring pickups so your transportation is one less thing to manage.

Learn more about our dialysis transportation service or read the full dialysis transportation guide for how recurring rides work.

5. What to Expect on the Day of Your Ride

A little preparation makes pickup day smooth:

  • Be ready early. Plan to be ready about 15 minutes before your scheduled pickup. Drivers serve several riders, so being ready keeps everyone on time.
  • Expect door-to-door assistance. Our drivers provide hands-on, door-to-door help — assisting you from your door to the vehicle and into your destination, including help with your wheelchair or walker.
  • Bring your ID. Have a photo ID with you, and for a Medicaid ride, keep your NJ FamilyCare member ID card on hand.

If anything changes — your appointment time moves, or you need to cancel — let us know as soon as possible so we can adjust the schedule.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far in advance should I book?

For private rides with Delta, we recommend booking 24 to 48 hours ahead so we can confirm the right vehicle and pickup window, though same-day rides are available when we have capacity. For a Medicaid (NJ FamilyCare) ride, call your plan's transportation line at least 2 business days before your appointment.

How do I book a Medicaid ride in NJ?

NJ Medicaid (NJ FamilyCare) transportation is arranged through your managed care plan, and New Jersey's statewide Medicaid transportation broker is ModivCare (formerly LogistiCare). Call the transportation number printed on the back of your plan card and book at least 2 business days ahead. Our Medicaid NEMT guide lists the transportation phone number for each NJ FamilyCare plan.

Can I book a same-day medical ride?

Same-day rides with Delta are available when we have a vehicle free, so call (973) 389-3110 as early as possible and we will do our best to fit you in. Advance booking is always more reliable. Medicaid same-day requests are handled by your plan's transportation broker case by case.

Can I set up recurring dialysis rides?

Yes. Patients with regular treatments such as dialysis or chemotherapy can set up recurring transport (a standing order) with a single setup, so you do not have to call before every appointment. Tell us your treatment schedule when you book and we will reserve the same recurring pickups.

What information do I need to book?

Have your pickup and destination addresses, the appointment date and time, your mobility needs or required vehicle type (ambulatory, wheelchair van, or stretcher), whether the trip is one-way or round-trip, and any equipment you travel with such as a wheelchair, walker, or oxygen. For a Medicaid ride you will also need your NJ FamilyCare member ID.
