Set Up Recurring Dialysis Transport — (973) 389-3110Types of Dialysis: Hemodialysis vs. Peritoneal Dialysis
There are two main types of dialysis for patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) or chronic kidney disease (CKD) requiring renal replacement therapy:
Hemodialysis (In-Center)
Blood is pumped through an external dialysis machine that filters waste and excess fluid. Sessions last 3–5 hours and are performed at a dialysis center, typically 3 times per week. This is by far the most common form — and the one requiring recurring NEMT.
Requires NEMT 3x/week
Peritoneal Dialysis (Home-Based)
Waste is filtered through the peritoneum (the lining of the abdomen) using a catheter and dialysate fluid at home. Patients perform exchanges daily, either manually (CAPD) or overnight via machine (APD). Transportation to a dialysis center is not needed for routine treatment.
Only needs transport for follow-up visits
The vast majority of dialysis patients in NJ — approximately 85–90% — receive in-center hemodialysis and therefore require transportation three times per week, every week, indefinitely until a kidney transplant or change in treatment.
Why Reliable NEMT Is Critical for Hemodialysis Patients
For dialysis patients, missing even a single session is medically dangerous. Without dialysis, waste products and fluid accumulate in the bloodstream rapidly. Missing one session can cause:
- Dangerous fluid buildup (pulmonary edema, swelling)
- Hyperkalemia (dangerously high potassium levels) leading to cardiac arrhythmia
- Uremic symptoms — confusion, vomiting, and extreme fatigue
- Emergency hospitalization
- Accelerated decline in remaining kidney function
Transportation unreliability is one of the leading causes of missed dialysis sessions in NJ. A reliable NEMT provider is not a luxury — it is a medical necessity as fundamental as the treatment itself.
NJ Dialysis Center Networks
New Jersey has hundreds of in-center hemodialysis locations operated by national chains and independent providers. The major networks include:
DaVita Kidney Care
One of the two largest dialysis chains in the U.S., with numerous NJ locations including facilities in Paterson, Newark, Jersey City, Hackensack, Clifton, and across North and Central NJ.
Fresenius Kidney Care
The other major national chain with extensive NJ coverage. Fresenius operates in virtually every NJ county, with facilities in Trenton, Camden, Toms River, Morristown, and many northern NJ cities.
Innovative Renal Care (formerly American Renal Associates)
A network focused on partnership with nephrologists. NJ locations concentrated in North and Central Jersey, with a focus on patient-centered care models.
Atlantic Health System Dialysis
Hospital-affiliated dialysis centers at Morristown Medical Center, Overlook Medical Center, and other Atlantic Health campuses across NJ.
RWJBarnabas Health Dialysis
Affiliated with Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital and Barnabas Health system. Facilities in New Brunswick, Livingston, Newark, and surrounding areas.
Delta Medical Transportation serves dialysis patients traveling to any of these networks and to independent dialysis centers throughout all 21 NJ counties.
How to Set Up Recurring Dialysis Transport

What Dialysis Patients Experience After Treatment
Delta drivers are trained to understand the physical realities that dialysis patients face immediately after treatment:
Fatigue
Most patients feel exhausted immediately after hemodialysis. Drivers allow extra time for boarding and never rush patients.
Low Blood Pressure
Post-dialysis hypotension can cause dizziness and falls. Drivers assist patients carefully during transfer and seating.
Muscle Cramps
Common during and after treatment. Drivers offer a comfortable, padded environment and smooth driving.
Nausea
Some patients experience nausea post-treatment. Vehicles are kept clean and drivers can adjust temperature to patient comfort.
Weakness
Patients may need assistance from the vehicle to their door. Delta provides door-through-door assist on request.
Emotional Exhaustion
Three sessions per week is a significant burden. Delta drivers are compassionate and patient — never rushed or dismissive.
Tips for a Smooth Dialysis Transport Experience
- Set up transport before starting dialysis. If you are newly diagnosed with ESRD and starting treatment, arrange transport before your first session, not after.
- Keep a copy of your authorization number. If a driver does not show, your MCO needs this to dispatch a backup.
- Tell your transport provider if your schedule changes. Dialysis shift changes need at least 48–72 hours notice for transport adjustment.
- Inform the driver of any new medical changes. If your fall risk, mobility, or post-treatment symptoms change, update your transport provider so they can adjust assistance level.
- Have a backup plan. Keep a family member or neighbor's number on hand as a backup in case of transport disruption. For Medicaid rides, always know your MCO's after-hours transport line.
- Renew standing orders proactively. Do not wait for your Medicaid standing order to expire. Renew 3–4 weeks early to avoid gaps in service.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many times per week do dialysis patients need transportation?
Hemodialysis requires 3x/week in-center treatment — most commonly Monday/Wednesday/Friday or Tuesday/Thursday/Saturday. Each session needs round-trip transport.
Does Medicaid cover dialysis transportation in NJ?
Yes. NJ FamilyCare covers NEMT for dialysis via a standing order. Your nephrologist must provide a prescription of necessity, and your MCO transportation broker arranges rides.
Does Medicare cover dialysis transportation?
Original Medicare does not cover routine NEMT. Medicare Advantage plans often include NEMT as a supplemental benefit. Dual-eligible patients (Medicare + Medicaid) are covered through Medicaid for transportation.
What dialysis networks does Delta serve in NJ?
Delta serves DaVita, Fresenius, Innovative Renal Care, Atlantic Health, RWJBarnabas, and independent dialysis centers throughout all 21 NJ counties.
What is a dialysis standing order for transportation?
A single authorization from your MCO covering all recurring dialysis trips for a period (90 days to 1 year), eliminating the need to request each trip individually.
Why do dialysis patients need special transport?
Post-dialysis fatigue, low blood pressure, dizziness, and weakness make it unsafe to drive. Trained NEMT drivers understand these symptoms and assist patients with care.
