Wheelchair Van Transport in Union, NJ
Union Township has an emergency room on Galloping Hill Road, but the hospital it belongs to — Overlook Medical Center — is in Summit. The Union Campus handles emergencies and a full slate of outpatient care; anything needing admission travels to Elizabeth, Summit or Rahway. Delta Medical Transportation runs wheelchair vans from Totowa into Union seven days a week: ramp entry, the rider stays in their own chair, four-point tie-down and a lap-and-shoulder belt before the doors close.

Union has an emergency room, but the hospital it belongs to is in Summit. Overlook Medical Center's Union Campus at 1000 Galloping Hill Road is laid out as a set of color-coded awnings, and it matters which one you pull up to: emergency services, ambulatory surgery, breast and cardiac imaging and orthopedics under the red awning; nephrology, pulmonology, outpatient physical therapy and wound healing under the green; cancer care and infusion under the blue. What the campus does not do is admit you. Anything needing an inpatient bed or a specialty floor leaves the township — Trinitas Regional Medical Center on Williamson Street in Elizabeth, southeast; Overlook's own hospital on Beauvoir Avenue in Summit, west; Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Rahway on Stone Street, south; or a Newark hospital across the Essex County line.
That county line is where Union Township's transportation math breaks down. The township's whole northern edge is Essex County — Irvington to the northeast, Maplewood to the north, Millburn to the northwest — so for a lot of Union residents the nearest big-hospital cluster is technically out of county. Union County paratransit runs Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., with limited Saturday hours and no service on Sundays or observed holidays, and out-of-county medical trips are provided Mondays and Wednesdays only. A standing appointment at Trinitas in Elizabeth or Overlook in Summit is in-county and works. A Thursday consult a few blocks past the Irvington border does not. Rides are shared, first-come first-served, and booked as much as three weeks ahead. Delta's wheelchair vans dispatch around the clock, seven days a week, and cross county lines on any day of the week.
Not every Union trip leaves town, and the in-town ones have their own obstacle. A Fresenius Medical Care unit runs in-center hemodialysis at 879 Rahway Avenue — Medicare still lists it under a Hillside name, but the building is in Union — and dialysis three days a week is the classic standing wheelchair-van schedule. Cornell Hall Care & Rehabilitation Center on Chestnut Street is a 177-bed skilled nursing and rehab facility, which means discharges, readmissions and outpatient follow-ups on top of that. Moving across the township is the hard part: U.S. Route 22 and Interstate 78 both cut through Union, and the county runs a shuttle along Route 22 through Union, Kenilworth and Springfield specifically to give people a safer way to cross the highway. A shuttle still starts and ends at a bus stop. Delta picks up at the door — Morris Avenue, Chestnut Street, wherever the address actually is — loads by ramp, and secures the chair with a four-point tie-down and a lap-and-shoulder belt.
Every trip is quoted individually — distance, whether you need a return leg, stairs at either address, and the time of day all matter. If a Union patient cannot sit upright for the journey, a wheelchair van is the wrong vehicle and we will arrange stretcher transport instead.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do you serve the Overlook Union Campus on Galloping Hill Road?
Yes, for scheduled trips — a wheelchair van is non-emergency transport, so call 911 if it is an emergency. We bring Union residents to appointments across that campus: imaging and orthopedics under the red awning, wound healing and outpatient physical therapy under the green, infusion and cancer care under the blue, and home again after a same-day procedure or an ED visit. If the patient cannot sit up and has to travel lying flat, that is our stretcher service — Delta holds a New Jersey BLS ambulance license as well.
Can you take me from Union to a hospital in Newark, Elizabeth, Summit or Rahway?
Yes. Delta is based in Totowa and serves all 21 New Jersey counties, so a Union pickup can end at a Newark hospital, at Trinitas in Elizabeth, at Overlook in Summit, at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Rahway, or at a rehab in another county entirely. Union County paratransit provides out-of-county medical trips on Mondays and Wednesdays only; we do not work that way. Call (973) 389-3110 for a free quote on any route.
Will Medicare or NJ FamilyCare pay for a wheelchair van in Union?
Original Medicare does not cover routine non-emergency transport, so a Medicare card alone will not pay for a wheelchair van. If you have NJ FamilyCare, New Jersey brokers all Medicaid NEMT through ModivCare — reserve at 1-866-527-9933 at least two business days ahead. All five managed-care plans, including Horizon NJ Health and UnitedHealthcare Community Plan, use that same broker. For private-pay trips, call (973) 389-3110 for a free quote.
How far ahead do I need to book, and do you run weekends?
We dispatch 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including weekends and holidays, so a Sunday discharge from a Union rehab or an early-morning dialysis pickup on Rahway Avenue is a normal booking, not an exception. For standing schedules — dialysis, infusion, wound care — we set the whole week at once. Same-day and next-day requests are usually fine; call (973) 389-3110. Dispatch handles English, Spanish and Arabic.
