Salem is the county seat, but the hospital is not in the city. Inspira Medical Center Mannington — the former Salem Medical Center, and before that Memorial Hospital of Salem County — stands at 310 Salem–Woodstown Road out at the Pointers, the junction in Mannington Township where Route 45 crosses County Route 540 and where the old signs pointed the way back toward Salem. Its emergency department runs 24 hours. Getting there from a house on Broadway or Market Street is the part nobody plans for. Both streets are National Register historic districts — Market Street listed in 1975, Broadway in 1992 — block after block of Federal, Greek Revival and Delaware Valley Colonial brick put up long before anyone designed a doorway around a wheelchair. One road carries most of the appointment calendar here. Route 45 starts at Route 49 in downtown Salem as Market Street and runs on as Salem–Woodstown Road, and three of the places a Salem wheelchair user goes most often sit along it. Fresenius Kidney Care Mannington is at number 5, running in-center hemodialysis on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays only, with chairs opening at 5 a.m. — a first-shift patient is at the curb in the dark, and after a session the ride home matters more than the ride out. Our drivers stay with the appointment rather than dropping and disappearing, and they bring the wheelchair back to the door — on dialysis days, on discharge day, and on the outpatient follow-ups that come after.

Salem County runs SCOOT, a curb-to-curb van service through the Office of Aging & Disabilities, but it is built for residents 60 and over, disabled residents under 60, and residents of designated rural areas, and trips have to be reserved at least two business days ahead. That leaves the trips it was never designed for: an appointment booked yesterday, a discharge called in this morning, a spouse who does not meet the eligibility test. It also leaves the long runs. Route 49 is Broadway through downtown Salem — the Southern Jersey Family Medical Centers clinic sits on it at 238 East Broadway — and it carries on out of town across the Salem River to Deepwater in Pennsville Township, where I-295, the New Jersey Turnpike, US 40 and the Delaware Memorial Bridge all converge. From there it is Cooper University Hospital in Camden, a Level I trauma center, or Inspira Medical Center Mullica Hill. Delta answers the phone at any hour, every day.
