There is no hospital inside Pompton Lakes. The borough covers just over three square miles between Wanaque and Wayne, and the closest emergency room sits across the Pequannock River in Pompton Plains — Atlantic Health Chilton Medical Center at 97 West Parkway, technically in Pequannock Township and technically in Morris County, even though it borders the borough directly. On the same street, the Atlantic Health Pavilion at 242 West Parkway handles the outpatient side: physical therapy, cardiac rehabilitation, pulmonary rehabilitation, cardiac imaging and radiology. For a wheelchair user those are the recurring trips — a course of cardiac rehab is dozens of visits, not one — and every one of them starts with getting out of the borough and over the river.

Public transit here runs the wrong way for medical trips. Only one NJ Transit bus reaches Pompton Lakes at all: the 748, and only on select weekday rush-hour trips. It runs between Paterson and Willowbrook Mall in Wayne by way of Paterson–Hamburg Turnpike, which is a commuting shape, not a treatment shape — it does not go to Chilton, and a dialysis chair time or a nine-fifteen rehab slot does not care about rush hour. Passaic County's Department of Senior Services, Disability and Veterans' Affairs runs a curb-to-curb Para-Transit program with lift vans for county residents, and it does book medical trips, but rides are assigned first come, first served, and curb-to-curb is not door-through-door. When the appointment window is fixed, a scheduled wheelchair van is the difference.

Pompton Lakes is a river-valley town, and that shapes every route out of it. The Ramapo, Pequannock and Wanaque all run through the area, and the Ramapo and Pequannock meet just south of the borough line to form the Pompton — which is why the valley floods, most memorably in 2011 under Hurricane Irene. Practically, it means a wheelchair van from here is crossing water on most trips and needs a driver who knows which way around to go after a storm. Standing dialysis runs usually head south to DaVita St Joseph's Wayne Dialysis on Willowbrook Boulevard; hospital trips beyond Chilton go to St. Joseph's Wayne Medical Center on Hamburg Turnpike. North of the borough, the Phoenix Center for Rehabilitation and Pediatrics on Ringwood Avenue in Haskell — the old Wanaque Center — is a regular discharge destination.
