Rockaway is two municipalities sharing one name: a 2.08-square-mile borough of 6,598 people, and the 41.7-square-mile township it was set off from in 1894, home to 25,341 more. Neither has a hospital. The closest emergency room is Saint Clare's Denville Hospital at 25 Pocono Road, a little under three miles due east of the borough. Saint Clare's second campus, Dover Hospital at 400 West Blackwell Street, sits about three miles west-southwest. Anything more specialized usually means Atlantic Health System: Morristown Medical Center on Madison Avenue, roughly eight miles south-southeast, or Chilton Medical Center in Pompton Plains, about twelve miles east-northeast. The township is the harder pickup. Its 41.7 square miles run north into wooded Highlands country and hold White Meadow Lake, Green Pond, Marcella, Hibernia and Mount Hope — lake and hillside neighborhoods reached by narrow winding roads where a driveway can pitch steeply toward the front door. The borough is the opposite problem: two square miles of older, tight streets around East and West Main, Wall and Union, where a lift needs deliberate curb placement before the ramp comes down. Interstate 80 gives the township two doors — Exit 35 at Mount Hope Avenue, the Rockaway Townsquare exit, and Exit 37 for County Route 513 toward Hibernia.

Standing appointments are where the arithmetic bites. There is no dialysis unit inside either Rockaway. The nearest is DaVita Rockaway Dialysis, which despite the name sits at 417 U.S. Highway 46 in Dover, about a mile and a quarter west-southwest of the borough. There is a Fresenius unit at 400 West Blackwell Street, the same address as Saint Clare's Dover Hospital, and more chairs roughly six miles west along Route 46 in Kenvil. Three sessions a week, every week, means the ride has to be as dependable as the chair. Rockaway also has no train station of its own — Denville, about two miles east-southeast on the Morristown and Montclair-Boonton lines, and Dover are the nearest stops.
