Long Branch is one of the few places on this stretch of the Monmouth County shore where the hospital is in town rather than a drive away. Monmouth Medical Center stands at 300 Second Avenue — an RWJBarnabas Health hospital and a regional medical campus of Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, with the Leon Hess Cancer Center, the Jacqueline M. Wilentz Breast Center and the Unterberg Children's Hospital on the same campus. That makes a lot of the wheelchair-van work here short-haul: a resident in the Elberon section riding to a radiation appointment, or a short-term rehab patient going from Complete Care at Monmouth on Bath Avenue to an imaging slot and back the same morning. It also makes Long Branch a destination as often as an origin — we bring riders in from Deal, Oceanport, Monmouth Beach and West Long Branch, not only out.

Dialysis is the appointment that sets the rhythm of the week, and it is the one trip that takes Long Branch riders out of the city even though the hospital is in it. Most go west to Eatontown, where DaVita Atlantic Artificial Kidney Center sits on Industrial Way West, or south to DaVita Neptune Dialysis Center on Bradley Avenue. Route 36 is the road out toward Eatontown, and from June through Labor Day it carries beach traffic on top of everything else, so we build extra time into summer runs rather than let a chair time slip. Higher-acuity and trauma cases go to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune — the Level I adult trauma center for Monmouth and Ocean counties — or to Riverview Medical Center in Red Bank. Delta covers those routes seven days a week and sets them up as standing schedules for riders who need the same three days every week.

The county's own service fills part of the gap and not the rest. Monmouth County's SCAT buses run weekdays only and require an advance reservation, and the day ends in the afternoon; NJ Transit's Access Link is the ADA paratransit alternative, and it is tied to the fixed-route bus network. Evenings, weekends and same-day changes fall outside both. Rail does not solve it either: Long Branch station on Third Avenue is accessible and is where the electric trains from New York Penn Station end, but no train will get a wheelchair user to the Monmouth Family Health Center on Broadway or to a specialist in Red Bank. Delta's vans are door-through-door, dispatched around the clock, with drivers who speak English, Spanish and Arabic.
