Piscataway has no general acute-care hospital inside its roughly nineteen square miles, and its 60,000-plus residents are spread across sections that never resolve into a single downtown: New Market, Possumtown, Randolphville, North Stelton, Arbor. Interstate 287 traverses the township with four interchanges, exits 6 through 9, and Route 18 ends here at exit 8 after running as a four-lane arterial along Hoes Lane past the Rutgers Busch campus. There is no rail station in the township at all; the nearest are Dunellen on the Raritan Valley Line and Edison on the Northeast Corridor. Our vans board by ramp or lift, so the rider stays in their own wheelchair, secured with a four-point tie-down plus a separate lap-and-shoulder belt.

The Raritan River forms Piscataway's southern edge, and two bridges carry township traffic across it into New Brunswick. Route 18 uses the John A. Lynch Sr. Memorial Bridge, which opened in 1983. County Route 609 uses the Landing Lane Bridge, a two-lane span that opened in 1895 and had its deck and truss rebuilt on the original piers a century later; it carries traffic over both the river and the Delaware and Raritan Canal, and it has closed outright for about a month at a time when it needs repairs. On the far side sit Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital at One Robert Wood Johnson Place, one of only three Level I trauma centers in New Jersey, the Jack & Sheryl Morris Cancer Center that opened beside it in June 2025, and Saint Peter's University Hospital on Easton Avenue. When Landing Lane is shut, everything funnels onto Route 18.

Not every trip leaves town. Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care at 671 Hoes Lane West is a psychiatric and addiction hospital inside the township, running acute psychiatric services and partial-hospitalization programs: exactly the repeating round trip a standing wheelchair-van schedule is built for. ACCELerate Skilled Nursing & Rehabilitation Center on Sterling Drive, 124 certified beds, handles short-term rehab stays and the discharge transfer at the end of them. Dialysis is the other standing schedule, three chair times a week, run to centers in and around Piscataway. With no rail station in the township there is no train fallback here, so every trip is a road trip, which is why we build pickup windows around the bridges rather than around the clock.
