Old Bridge is one of only a handful of Middlesex County municipalities with an acute-care hospital inside its own borders. Old Bridge Medical Center at 1 Hospital Plaza is part of Hackensack Meridian Health — 113 beds, a 24-hour emergency department, Advanced Certification as a Primary Stroke Center and round-the-clock emergency psychiatric services. That proximity is real, but so is the township's size: roughly forty square miles running from the Raritan Bay shoreline at Laurence Harbor inland through Cheesequake and Browntown, stitched together by Routes 9, 18, 34 and 35 and county roads 516, 520 and 527. Route 34 does not pass through so much as stop here — it ends inside the township at its interchange with Route 9. A ride home after discharge can still mean crossing most of the same town, which is why our drivers finish loading and securing the chair before the van moves at all.
