Wheelchair Van Transport — Trenton, NJ

Wheelchair Van Transport in Trenton, NJ

Trenton is one of the few Mercer County municipalities with a full acute-care hospital inside its own borders — Capital Health Regional Medical Center on Brunswick Avenue. Since the East Trenton campus closed in June 2025, more wheelchair trips leave the city. The hardest part of a Trenton run is usually the stoop, not the drive.

Wheelchair-Accessible Transportation in Trenton

Trenton is one of the few Mercer County municipalities with a full acute-care hospital inside its own borders: Capital Health Regional Medical Center at 750 Brunswick Avenue, a Level II trauma center and a state-designated comprehensive stroke center. That map changed in June 2025, when Capital Health – East Trenton — the former St. Francis Medical Center campus at 601 Hamilton Avenue, with its emergency entrance on Bert Avenue — shut down after engineers found structural problems in an adjoining building on the property that threatened the leased building housing the emergency department and outpatient clinic. It stopped taking patients on June 5, 2025 and has not reopened. Capital Health's own notice pointed patients to Regional on Brunswick Avenue about two miles away, RWJUH Hamilton about four, and Hopewell just over eight.

A wheelchair van is not an ambulance and not a stretcher unit. The van carries a hydraulic lift or a fold-out ramp, the passenger rolls on and stays seated in their own chair, and the chair is locked down with a four-point tie-down before the van moves. In Trenton that matters more at the curb than on the road. Much of the city is 19th-century row housing on narrow streets — Chambersburg, the Island, North Trenton — where the front door sits three or four steps above the sidewalk with no driveway and no ramp. In Chambersburg, better than a third of the housing stock is row houses and attached homes. Our drivers plan for the stoop and the double-parked block, not just the hospital entrance.

Dialysis drives the standing schedule here. Capital Health runs a 28-station outpatient dialysis unit at Regional Medical Center with morning, noon and night shifts. Fresenius Kidney Care Trenton sits on Fuld Street beside that same campus and runs early-morning chairs, so pickups happen in the dark for much of the year. DaVita Renal Center of Hamilton on White Horse Avenue in Hamilton Township takes a share of the city's patients too. Three days a week on the clock is a different job than a one-off appointment, so we book those as recurring runs with the same driver where we can. Downtown adds friction: around the Capitol complex, West State Street is metered on-street parking and the garage is weekday-limited, so pickups there get planned around it. Henry J. Austin Health Center on North Warren Street is another in-city destination.

Every trip is quoted individually — distance, whether you need a return leg, stairs at either address, and the time of day all matter. If a Trenton patient cannot sit upright for the journey, a wheelchair van is the wrong vehicle and we will arrange stretcher transport instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Trenton have its own hospital, or will I be taken out of the city?

Trenton has one: Capital Health Regional Medical Center at 750 Brunswick Avenue, a Level II trauma center and a state-designated comprehensive stroke center. Plenty of Trenton appointments still land outside the city, though — Capital Health Medical Center – Hopewell off Scotch Road, Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Hamilton on Hamilton Health Place, or Lawrence Rehabilitation Hospital on Lawrenceville Road in Lawrence Township. Delta is based in Totowa and serves all 21 New Jersey counties, so our wheelchair vans run all of those, in-city or out.

What happened to the emergency room on Bert Avenue in East Trenton?

Capital Health – East Trenton, the former St. Francis Medical Center campus at 601 Hamilton Avenue, shut down in June 2025 after engineers found structural problems in an adjoining building on the property that threatened the leased building housing the satellite emergency department and outpatient clinic. It stopped taking patients on June 5, 2025 and has not reopened. Capital Health's own notice pointed patients to Regional on Brunswick Avenue about two miles away, RWJUH Hamilton about four, and Hopewell just over eight — all trips Delta covers by wheelchair van.

My mother's row house has four steps down to the sidewalk. Can she still use a wheelchair van?

Yes — that is the standard Trenton pickup. Tell the dispatcher how many steps there are, whether there is a railing, and roughly what the chair and passenger weigh when you call (973) 389-3110, so the right van and crew are assigned and arrive with time to do it without rushing. Delta is NJ DOH–licensed for both wheelchair van (MAV) and BLS ambulance, so if her needs change we do not have to hand the trip to another company.

Can you handle a standing dialysis schedule in Trenton?

Yes. Recurring dialysis runs are a large share of Delta's Trenton work — Capital Health's 28-station outpatient unit at Regional Medical Center, Fresenius Kidney Care Trenton on Fuld Street, and DaVita Renal Center of Hamilton on White Horse Avenue in Hamilton Township. A standing schedule is set once, including the return leg, which usually matters more because patients come off the machine tired. We dispatch 24/7 and take calls in English, Spanish and Arabic.
