There is no hospital inside Kearny's borders, so almost every appointment starts with a river crossing. The Passaic separates the town from Newark and Belleville — west across it is Clara Maass Medical Center on Clara Maass Drive, and further into Essex County are University Hospital on Bergen Street, Saint Michael's Medical Center on Central Avenue and Newark Beth Israel on Lyons Avenue. The Hackensack separates Kearny from Jersey City and Secaucus: Route 7 crosses it into Jersey City, where Jersey City Medical Center on Grand Street is Hudson County's Level II trauma center, while Secaucus University Hospital sits on Meadowlands Parkway. None of that is a walkable trip, and none of it is comfortable in a wheelchair on a bus. Kearny comes in three pieces and each one transports differently. The Uplands are the residential ridge in the northwestern part of town, riding high between the Kearny Meadows and the Passaic River; the Meadows and South Kearny lie flat at water level, industrial and physically separate from the residential blocks. No passenger train has stopped in Kearny since service ended in 1966 — the nearest PATH is Harrison, on Frank E. Rodgers Boulevard South, elevator-equipped since the rebuild but still a trip you have to make before the trip. Route 7 crosses the Hackensack on the Wittpenn Bridge, a vertical-lift span whose replacement opened in October 2021 and which halts traffic every time it raises. Two Medicare-certified nursing and rehab facilities operate in town — Alaris Health at Belgrove on Belgrove Drive and Alaris Health at Kearny on Bergen Avenue, 120 certified beds apiece — which means a steady flow of hospital discharges arriving and residents heading back out for specialist follow-ups. What Kearny does not have is a dialysis chair.
