It is big and spread out — roughly 47 square miles, and second in population only to Washington Township among Gloucester County's twenty-four municipalities — and most of its medical addresses sit in one string along the South Black Horse Pike. That stretch is US 322, which turns southeast onto the Pike at the exact point where Route 42 ends; the DaVita dialysis unit at 1217 and the Juniper Village assisted-living campus at 1640 are both on it. Two naming problems trip up out-of-town dispatchers. Nearly every address here reads Williamstown rather than Monroe Township, even though only about 15,000 of the township's 37,000 residents live inside the Williamstown census place — and there is a second, entirely unrelated Monroe Township up in Middlesex County. The nearest acute-care hospital is Jefferson Washington Township Hospital on Hurffville-Cross Keys Road in Turnersville, a run northwest up Route 42 — which begins right here, at US 322 in Williamstown, and does not stop until Bellmawr. Inspira Medical Center Mullica Hill is the opposite direction, west on that same 322 through Glassboro and past Rowan, over in Harrison Township. Berlin-Cross Keys Road leads out of the township's Cross Keys corner toward Berlin Borough in Camden County, where Virtua's emergency department on Townsend Avenue is open around the clock but keeps no inpatient beds — anyone who needs admitting gets transferred a second time. And for Cooper University Hospital in Camden or the Philadelphia teaching hospitals, it is Route 42 north to I-76 and across the Delaware. Four very different trips, four very different pickup times.

Gloucester County runs its own non-emergency medical transportation for residents, and the county's application form says the limit plainly: Monday through Friday only. The same form tells dialysis patients to route their requests through the social worker at their treatment center rather than applying directly. That leaves the gaps a wheelchair user actually falls into — a Saturday discharge, an evening pickup, a Philadelphia specialist, a chair time the county schedule cannot bend around.
