West Orange runs its own senior bus out of the Health Department on Main Street, and it is genuinely useful: curb-to-curb transportation within West Orange for residents 60 and over, with a wheelchair-lift bus available on a call-in basis. It is also, by the township's own account, not something to lean on. Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation's 152-bed campus at 1199 is where Kessler began in 1948 and is still the only hospital in the township; Daughters of Israel Pleasant Valley Home, 303 beds of skilled nursing and sub-acute rehab, is up the road at 1155, and Green Hill Senior Living and Rehabilitation sits at 103. Dialysis splits between DaVita West Orange on Mount Pleasant Avenue and the Dialysis Center of West Orange on Old Short Hills Road. Mount Pleasant is one of the three avenues that climbs the steep face of the First Watchung Mountain out of downtown — the township tops out past 500 feet — so plenty of these addresses come with a pitched driveway and a stepped entry. The driver walks the approach first and picks a level spot before the ramp comes down.

For acute care, West Orange leaves town. Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center — 597 beds, RWJBarnabas Health, the former Saint Barnabas Medical Center — sits at 94 Old Short Hills Road in Livingston, and Old Short Hills Road is where the municipal line runs: the dialysis center at 101 carries a West Orange address, the hospital at 94 a Livingston one. CareWell Health Medical Center, the former East Orange General, is at 300 Central Avenue in East Orange, two towns east past Orange, and the Newark hospitals lie beyond it. West Orange has no NJ Transit rail station of its own — the township jitney runs weekdays to the Brick Church, Orange and South Orange platforms — and its bus routes mostly feed Newark. Fine for an errand, useless for a 6 a.m. surgical check-in. Delta is licensed by the New Jersey Department of Health for wheelchair van and BLS ambulance both, so if a trip turns out to need a stretcher instead, it is still one phone call.
