Irvington General Hospital closed in 2006. Its site at 832 Chancellor Avenue sat blighted for close to a decade before it was cleared and rebuilt as housing, and since then every hospital trip out of Irvington has been an out-of-town trip. The township packs about 61,000 people into 2.92 square miles, with Newark along its eastern edge, Maplewood to the west, and Hillside and Union Township over the Union County line to the south. Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, the RWJBarnabas hospital at 201 Lyons Avenue, sits at the far end of the same Lyons Avenue that crosses the Irvington line into Newark's Weequahic section. Our vans are ramp- or lift-equipped, so the rider stays in their own chair, secured with a four-point tie-down plus a lap-and-shoulder belt.

Two dialysis centers sit inside Irvington itself. DaVita Irvington Dialysis is at 468 Chancellor Avenue — the same street the old hospital stood on — and runs both in-center hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. Fresenius Kidney Care Irvington is at 10 Camptown Road, a street named for what this township was called before it took the name Irvington. The Fresenius unit runs Monday through Saturday from 5 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. and is closed Sundays, so first-shift pickups happen in the dark and the ride home comes when a patient is drained and unsteady. Irvington also has the Newark Community Health Center site at 1148–1150 Springfield Avenue and Alliance Care Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, a 212-bed skilled nursing and short-term rehab facility on 40th Street. Standing weekly schedules work better here than booking ride by ride.

Irvington has no train station. It has one of NJ Transit's busiest bus hubs at the Irvington Bus Terminal on Springfield Avenue, and the Garden State Parkway cutting through the middle of the township at exits 143 and 144 — neither of which gets a power wheelchair to an 8 a.m. appointment. Essex County's Special Transportation vans (973-737-7200) carry residents 60 and over and adults with disabilities, but the county books them for destinations within Essex County, asks for at least two business days' notice, and states plainly that drivers give arm assistance and do not do stairs. That rules out Trinitas Regional Medical Center in Elizabeth, across the Union County line, and it rules out a lot of Irvington front stoops. On blocks this dense the closest legal curb space is often not the one in front of your door, which is why our drivers work door-through-door.
