For a township of about 13,000 people on 4.24 square miles, Cedar Grove carries an unusual amount of long-term care. Five Medicare- and Medicaid-certified nursing homes operate inside the township line: Alaris Health at Cedar Grove on Grove Avenue, Complete Care at Cedar Grove on Ridge Road, Canterbury at Cedar Grove on Pompton Avenue, and Complete Care at St. Vincent's and Arbor Glen Center, both on East Lindsley Road — roughly 870 certified beds between them. So most wheelchair-van work here is repeat work: discharge transfers, follow-ups, imaging, wound care, dialysis. A wheelchair van is not an ambulance. The rider boards up a ramp or lift seated in their own chair, which is locked down with a four-point tie-down, then belted separately across the lap and shoulder.

There is no acute-care hospital in Cedar Grove and no emergency department anywhere in the township. The one hospital inside the borders, Essex County Hospital Center at 204 Grove Avenue, is a county psychiatric hospital and does not run an ER. So emergencies and most specialty appointments leave town. Hackensack Meridian Mountainside Medical Center at 1 Bay Avenue in Montclair is the closest acute-care hospital, about three miles south — closer than St. Mary's General in Passaic or Clara Maass in Belleville. Clara Maass Medical Center in Belleville and Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston take much of the surgical and specialty volume, Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation on Pleasant Valley Way in West Orange handles inpatient rehab, and Chilton Medical Center at 97 West Parkway in Pompton Plains sits about eight miles northwest, up Route 23.

Cedar Grove has no dialysis clinic, and neither do Verona, Little Falls or the Caldwells. The nearest chairs are the Fresenius clinic at 114 Valley Road in Montclair, a little over two miles south; Innovative Renal Care Woodland Park on McBride Avenue, under three miles north over the Passaic County line; and the 30-station unit at Mountainside itself. NJ Transit buses out of Cedar Grove run to Newark and to the Port Authority Bus Terminal, and the nearest train stations are in Little Falls and Montclair — none of which helps a 5:30 a.m. chair time. Route 23 through the township narrows to two lanes at Bradford Avenue and does not widen back to four until Grove Avenue, so we build pickup windows around that stretch of Pompton Avenue rather than around a map.
