Belleville does not have to send its residents out of town for basic hospital care. Clara Maass Medical Center, the RWJBarnabas Health hospital at 1 Clara Maass Drive, runs an emergency department plus cancer, heart, orthopedic, bariatric and wound care programs and an eye surgery center RWJBarnabas says performs more eye surgeries than anywhere else in New Jersey. Cataract follow-ups, infusion visits and pre-op appointments are short rides. Short does not mean easy. Many Belleville addresses we pick up from are older multi-family houses on the side streets off Washington Avenue — the road Route 7 follows north from the Second River at the Newark line — that open straight onto the sidewalk with no driveway and a few steps at the door. Belleville runs its own Dial-A-Ride through the health department for residents 60 and over and disabled adults 18 and over, and it is better than most municipal services because it does take people to medical appointments. The limits are the problem. It runs Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., with the last pickup call at 1:45 p.m. and 24 hours' notice required, and the medical destinations it will serve are Belleville, Bloomfield and Nutley — plus a Mountainside exception for dialysis patients. Newark and West Orange are not on that list, and neither is Saturday. Fresenius Kidney Care Belleville, at 36 Newark Avenue right in the township, opens at 5 a.m. Monday through Saturday — four hours before Dial-A-Ride starts, and on a day it does not run at all. Evening discharges from Clara Maass fall outside it too, as does any trip down Route 21 to Newark Beth Israel or University Hospital.
