County Route 507 — Locust Avenue, bending onto Main Avenue where it runs beside the river — is the one road that really serves the borough. In a van none of that is far. Nobody is asked to stand, pivot or transfer at the curb.

The borough has doctors' offices, dentists, physical therapists and pharmacies scattered along Main Avenue, Locust Avenue, Paterson Avenue and Union Boulevard — what it does not have is a bed. There is no hospital in Wallington and no nursing home; the nearest skilled-nursing beds are over the bridge in Passaic or a few towns up in Rochelle Park, Maywood and Hackensack. Emergency medical coverage in the borough comes from the all-volunteer Wallington Fire Department's emergency squad, and that is for 911 calls, not for a Tuesday-morning appointment. The closest emergency room sits across the water and across the county line: St. Mary's General Hospital at 350 Boulevard in Passaic, a Prime Healthcare acute-care hospital reached over the Gregory Avenue or Market Street bridge. What St. Mary's refers out runs into Bergen County — Hackensack University Medical Center at 30 Prospect Avenue, Holy Name Medical Center at 718 Teaneck Road in Teaneck, or county-owned Bergen New Bridge Medical Center at 230 East Ridgewood Avenue in Paramus.
