Fair Lawn's roughly 35,000 residents live in a borough with no hospital inside it, so every appointment starts by leaving town. The Passaic River is the western boundary; cross it and you are in Paterson, where St. Joseph's University Medical Center stands at 703 Main Street. Go the other way, across the Saddle River, and Paramus holds both The Valley Hospital at 4 Valley Health Plaza and Bergen New Bridge Medical Center at 230 East Ridgewood Avenue, with Hackensack University Medical Center southeast at 30 Prospect Avenue. Route 4 carries most of that traffic across the borough, and Route 208 begins right here — its southern end is the interchange with Route 4 and Saddle River Road. The borough's own Mini Bus runs Monday through Friday, 9am to 4pm, and only within Fair Lawn, which means it cannot make a single one of those trips.

Fair Lawn has exactly one Medicare-certified dialysis unit: DaVita Radburn Dialysis at 15-00 Pollitt Drive, a 21-station in-center facility. That is convenient if your chair time fits there, and a standing problem three mornings a week if it does not — the next closest chairs are in Paramus, on North Route 17 and West Century Road, or across the river in Paterson on Getty Avenue and on Broadway. A wheelchair-van rider on a Monday-Wednesday-Friday schedule makes six trips a week, and it is the ride home people underestimate. First, the addresses: Fair Lawn uses hyphenated house numbers across much of the borough — 15-00 Pollitt Drive, or 12-15 Saddle River Road, where the 159-bed Maple Glen Center sits — and navigation apps mangle them routinely. Second, the name game: Complete Care at Fair Lawn Edge is not in Fair Lawn. It is at 77 East 43rd Street in Paterson, on the far side of the Passaic, and a van sent to the wrong side of the river loses the appointment. And in Radburn, the 1929 "town for the motor age" built on superblocks and cul-de-sacs with houses turned to face interior parks rather than the street, the door a rider actually uses and the curb a van can reach are not always on the same side of the house.
