Why Transportation Is Critical for Physical Therapy Recovery
Physical therapy works — but only if you show up. Research consistently shows that patients who miss PT sessions have worse outcomes, longer recovery times, and greater risk of re-injury or surgical complications. Yet transportation is one of the most common reasons patients miss or discontinue physical therapy. Pain, limited mobility, inability to drive post-surgery, and the frequency of appointments (often 2-3 times per week) all create barriers that non-emergency medical transportation (NEMT) is specifically designed to remove.
Whether you're recovering from hip replacement surgery, a stroke, a spinal injury, or a sports injury — and whether you need a wheelchair-accessible van or simply a reliable ride because you cannot drive — Delta Medical Transportation provides professional PT transport throughout New Jersey.
Who Needs Physical Therapy Transportation?
Physical therapy patients span a wide range of conditions and mobility levels. NEMT for PT is particularly valuable for:
- Post-surgical patients — Hip replacements, knee replacements, spinal surgeries, and shoulder repairs all require extensive PT, and patients are typically restricted from driving for weeks to months post-operatively.
- Stroke survivors — Post-stroke rehabilitation involves multiple therapy disciplines including PT, OT, and speech therapy, often at dedicated rehab facilities. Many stroke survivors cannot drive independently. Read our guide on transportation for stroke survivors in NJ.
- Traumatic injury patients — Car accident injuries, falls, and workplace injuries often require extended PT. Workers' comp patients may have transportation covered — see our workers' comp transportation guide.
- Neurological condition patients — Multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, and other neurological conditions require ongoing PT to maintain function and prevent decline, often for years.
- Orthopedic and sports injury patients — Ligament tears, fractures, and rotator cuff injuries require consistent PT attendance for successful recovery.
- Cardiac rehabilitation patients — Cardiac rehab programs are structured like PT and require regular scheduled attendance at a supervised facility.

Ambulatory vs. Wheelchair Transport for PT Patients
PT patients' transport needs vary and can change over the course of recovery. Understanding the options:
Ambulatory/Sedan Transport
If you can walk with or without an assistive device (cane, walker) and step into a standard vehicle, ambulatory transport is appropriate. This is the most common PT transport need. Our drivers provide door-to-door service and hands-on assistance where needed — we're not a rideshare service.
Wheelchair-Accessible Van Transport
If you're using a wheelchair post-surgery or due to a neurological condition, or if you're between wheelchair and walking during your recovery, a wheelchair-accessible van is needed. Our vans have ramps or lifts, secured tie-down systems, and drivers trained in proper wheelchair securement.
Stretcher Transport for PT
Less common for outpatient PT but relevant for patients being transported from nursing homes or inpatient facilities to outpatient therapy sessions who cannot sit upright for transport. See our stretcher transport service for this need.
How Drivers Support PT Patients Specifically
Delta's drivers are trained to provide more than just driving. For PT patients specifically:
- Door-to-door service means we come to your door, assist you to the vehicle, and stay until you're safely inside the clinic
- After your appointment, we assist you back to the vehicle — this is especially important post-session when patients may be fatigued or working through pain
- Drivers are aware not to rush patients who need extra time to move post-therapy
- We accommodate walkers, crutches, canes, and other assistive devices
Insurance Coverage for PT Transportation
NJ FamilyCare (Medicaid)
Physical therapy is a covered Medicaid service, and transportation to PT is an eligible NEMT trip under NJ FamilyCare. Contact your managed care organization to authorize PT transport. Standing orders can be set up for recurring weekly appointments. See our NJ FamilyCare NEMT guide for full details.
Medicare Advantage
Many Medicare Advantage plans with NEMT benefits cover transportation to physical therapy appointments. Check your plan's Evidence of Coverage and call member services to confirm. See our Medicare Advantage NEMT guide.
Workers' Compensation
If your PT is related to a workplace injury, your workers' comp insurer may cover transportation. See our workers' comp transportation guide.
Private Pay
For patients with commercial insurance or no coverage for NEMT, private-pay PT transport from Delta is available at competitive rates. Learn more on our private-pay NEMT page.
How far in advance should I book PT transport?
For Medicaid transport, 48-72 hours advance notice is required by most MCOs. For private-pay with Delta, we recommend 24-48 hours notice. If you have a regular PT schedule (e.g., every Monday, Wednesday, Friday), set up a standing order so you don't need to book each session individually.
What if my PT appointment runs longer than expected?
Let us know when booking if your appointments tend to run long. We'll communicate with your driver to allow flexibility. For return trips, providing a window rather than an exact time (e.g., "pickup between 3:00-3:30 PM") is often more practical for PT appointments.
Can I take my walker or crutches in the vehicle?
Absolutely. All assistive devices — walkers, crutches, canes, rollators — can accompany you in the vehicle. There's no additional charge for standard assistive devices. Wheelchairs require a wheelchair-accessible van.
I had knee replacement surgery and can't bend my knee much. Can you accommodate that?
Yes. Our drivers are experienced with post-surgical patients who have range-of-motion restrictions. Let us know about your specific limitation when booking, and we'll ensure the vehicle and seating arrangement accommodate your needs.
Can Delta take me to Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation in West Orange?
Yes — Kessler West Orange is a regular destination for our drivers. We serve patients traveling to Kessler and its satellite locations throughout New Jersey. Contact us to arrange transport.
